Wall elements granted the building permit for a fabric-covered sports facility

Nallisport’s newest facility in Oulu’s busiest tourist area, Nallikari, is winning praise for its appearance. The requirements related to the cityscape and town plan were met by covering the fabric structure with sandwich element cladding and adding a separate entrance section.

“We wanted to get the new expansion ready quickly during the summer, so that the courts would be available for rent at the start of the autumn season. We knew that Best-Hall’s fabric-covered building would meet our needs and be cost-effective,” says Juho Antila, the entrepreneur running the Oulu-based ball game centre Nallisport.

However, the zoning regulations in the area that is mainly used for the purposes of tourism and recreation required fixed construction and traditional fixed walls.

“We decided to suggest the combination building our architect had drafted. The cityscape committee rejected the first proposal as unsuitable for the prominent location, but the second solution that concealed the shape of the fabric structure was approved.”

The end result exceeds expectations

Despite the slow start, Nallisport’s Kombi building, which combines multiple materials, was completed on schedule and the courts were made available to customers at the end of 2021. The facility boasts two tennis courts and three padel courts.

In addition to the modifiable appearance, the building’s usability has exceeded expectations.

“After the air dome previously located at the site, we wanted a warm, well-lit and comfortable facility. The new Best-Hall building delivered, and we have been very pleased. The court sizes are also optimal.”

The Kombi building combines benefits

According to Juho Antila, the customers and eventually the municipal inspectors were surprised by how the combination structure turned out.

“I’ve heard people say it doesn’t look anything like how they have pictured fabric-covered structures,” Antila says with a laugh.

Since Nallikari has some building rights left over, Antila is confident that the next expansion will also be a matching Kombi building.

“This combines many positive aspects for an entrepreneur: lower costs than traditional construction, speed of construction, good thermal values and comfort, and an aesthetic appearance that can be customised with windows and prefabricated wall elements.”
