Supervisor helps his team succeed: the job requires foresight and people skills
3:14

At Best-Hall’s engineering workshop, new buildings are welded together piece by piece, and each person’s work contributes to the success of the next stage. According to supervisor Teppo Isokangas, the building team is united by a high work ethic – they want to do a good job, they help their colleagues and they have the utmost trust in their team.

Best-Hall supervisor Teppo Isokangas is responsible for the production and advanced planning and scheduling of the engineering workshop. Advanced planning and scheduling refers to the distribution of project work between different workstations so that the manufacturing flows efficiently from one workstation to the next.

“Every morning I make sure that the necessary resources are allocated to the building projects and that the projects are progressing on schedule through the assembly line towards painting,” Isokangas says.

The supervisor’s duties also include quality assurance, contract cost calculation and material orders. There is plenty to do, as the welding department is often working on five to six projects at the same time.

“This suits me fine, as I like working under pressure! The hectic daily routine has taught me to anticipate future work and think ahead. Every day there are new challenges to solve, and that’s what makes this job interesting.”

Staff well-being is paramount

A total of 45 people work at the Best-Hall engineering workshop, 10 of whom form the team led by Isokangas. As a manager, Isokangas believes in openness and fair management.

“I want to help everyone give their best. I’m very sociable both on and off the job, so I’m easy to talk to, which helps with my work as a manager.”

According to Isokangas, promoting staff well-being is one of the most important tasks of a manager. He wants to take each employee into account in a holistic way.

“At times, it’s good to talk about more than just the day’s work. People are not mere working machines; we all have lives outside of work, and we can talk about those lives even at work.”

Jobs are allocated according to strengths

Isokangas has previously worked as a supervisor at HUR, a manufacturer of fitness equipment, among other positions. Now he has spent just over three years as a supervisor at Best-Hall’s engineering workshop.

“I had heard nothing but good things about Best-Hall, and the job interview confirmed my positive impression of the company. Over the years, this good impression has proved to be correct. Right from the start, I was impressed by the high work ethic of the engineering workshop’s employees, which is the reason why our efficiency is so high.”

According to Isokangas, the best part of the job is the great team spirit in the department and the freedom to work as you see fit.

“There are three supervisors in the workshop, and we were allowed to plan the division of labour ourselves so that everyone could make the best use of their strengths. My personal strengths are my sociability and proactive approach. I am able to anticipate the different phases of project work, manage several projects at the same time and coordinate the work of the team so that it runs smoothly.”
